The CTVS Unit of Medical College, Kolkata is one of the oldest in eastern India, established in 1975.
The Unit grew into a Department in 1982 under the effective guidance of Late Prof BN Guharay. Different non open heart operations like TVMC, ligation of PDA, and thoracic operations like decortication of lungs, lobectomy, porta caval shunt for portal hypertension, oesophageal operations like colon transfer for stricture oesophagus, trans hiatal oesophagectomy were usually done. The first Open Heart Surgery was done on 3rd December, 1983 in a 7 year old female patient of ASD under cardiopulmonary bypass. Then followed the era of valve replacements, both aortic, mitral and double valve replacement. At present the bulk of the cardiac surgery is CABG using mostly LIMA along with other venous and occasionally radial artery and LIMA-RIMA Y. Complications of MI like Post MI VSD, LV aneurysms, aortic aneurysm including arch aneurysm (video attached) are also done often.

The 2nd Heart transplantation was done on 20th December, 2018 succesfully. Both the patients are doing well at present.
Many famous cardiac surgeons of India were trained in this department
